Album: You Guys Kill Me
Artist: Third Eye Foundation
Released: 1998, Merge
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon
Brief Review: Much mellower than Semtex
which is the last 3EF I'd listened to. More of an ethnic
vibe rather than the full on drum noise beat attack of
the past. |
|
Album: In Persuit of Sashamane Land
Artist: African Headcharge
Released: 1993, On-U Sounds
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon
Brief Review: Ethnic deep dub. Tribal chants set to massive
dub echo. |
|
Album: Nova Feedback
Artist: Ax
Released: 1994, Freek
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon
Brief Review: Bassy rythmic noise from ex Skullflower
bassist Anthony diFranco. |
|
Album: Robot World
Artist: Bailter Space
Released: 1993, Flying Nun
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon,
Trouserpress
Brief Review: One of my all time favourite bands (NZ
or otherwise). Awesome live too. A little like a groovier
'Loveless' era MBV. |
|
Album: Thermos
Artist: Bailter Space
Released: 1990, Flying Nun
Links: Allmusic,
Trouserpress
Brief Review: Second album - seems to be increasingly
difficult to find which is a shame becuase this contains
some of their best tracks - 'Fish Eye', 'Ad Man' and 'Skin'.
Tribal drums, sheetmetal guitar and Krautrock repetition
never sounded so good. 'Thermos' and 'Tanker' are the
most metallic (no not metal; metallic) sounding albums
that give way to the warm fuzzbox sound of their later
material. |
|
Album: Aminita (seems to be called 'High
Frequency' in the UK)
Artist: Bardo Pond
Released: 1996, Matador
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon,
Trouserpress
Brief Review: Stoner psych rock. Probably their best
album although 'Bufo Alvarus' comes close. |
|
Album: Murky World of Barry Adamson
Artist: Barry Adamson
Released: 1999, Mute
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon
Brief Review: The alt-rock Barry White. Very smooth best
of compilation. |
|
Album: 3EP's
Artist: Beta Band
Released: 1999, Mute
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon,
Trouserpress
Brief Review: Kinda like if Teenage Fanclub were into
hip-hop. Very smooth compilation of early EP's. |
|
Album: Big Black
Artist: Atomizer
Released: 1986, Touch and Go
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon,
Trouserpress
Brief Review: Ferociously obnoxious with a sharp metallic
bile filled bite. |
|
Album: Big Black
Artist: Hammer Party
Released: 1986, Touch and Go
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon,
Trouserpress
Brief Review: Compilation of their first EP's. Less velocity
but more 'chiiiing'. |
|
Album: Big Black
Artist: Rich Mans 8 Track
Released: 1992, Touch and Go
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon,
Trouserpress
Brief Review: More genius - includes a fantastic live
'Cables'. |
|
Album: Big Black
Artist: Songs About Fucking
Released: 1987, Touch and Go
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon,
Trouserpress
Brief Review: Probably Big Black at their peak. 30minutes
of hardcore goodness that industrial and metal bands would
ape for years to come. |
|
Album: Debut
Artist: Bjork
Released: 1993, One Little Indian
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon,
Trouserpress
Brief Review: First (grown up) solo album after fronting
the Sugercubes. Mellow, laid back and totally original. |
|
Album: Post
Artist: Bjork
Released: 1995, One Little Indian
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon,
Trouserpress
Brief Review: More energetic, beat driven and less folksy
than 'Post' but still very cool. |
|
Album: BRMC
Artist: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Released: 2001, Virgin
Links: Allmusic,
Amazon
Brief Review: Sort of like an American take on the Jesus
& Mary Chain who broke up a few years ago so I guess
BRMC are necessary to fill the fuzzy pop noise gap left
in their wake. |
